TJ Dillashaw vs Cody Garbrandt
Rematch of course from November last year. So we had the situation with Cruz beating Dillashaw, Garbrandt beating Cruz and Dillashaw beat Garbrandt. So now these two go again with Dominick Cruz waiting in the wings.
So what will be different this time? Maybe nothing. Maybe Garbrandt went into the first fight a little to confident in his power. Maybe he thought if he hit Dillashaw he would put him away. Now he knows it will take a bit more, but he’s knows he can hurt Dillashaw.
Dillashaw has to be favourite to win again but I have a feeling Cody takes it. Play smart defensively and unload when he gets the chance, be patient and hopefully land something big. If Garbrandt doesn’t get the knockout then Dillashaw wins the decision.
Prediction : Garbrandt by KO/TKO
Demetrios Johnson vs Henry Cejudo
Demetrios has cleaned out his division and rather than move up in weight he seems to want to clean out this division twice. His perogative though.
Although they fought before, if anyone has a chance of beating Demetrios then it’s Henry Cejudo. He has amazing wrestling, good pace and very improved striking. To be clear though just because I think Cejudo can does not mean I think Cejudo will.
DJ is so quick and so technically good and can be so creative that no matter how well prepared you are or how good your game plan is, you can find yourself chasing shadows.
I do think this may be closer than their last fight, Cejudo could win a few rounds but I don’t think it will be enough. DJ will be his usual elusive self and get a decision.
Prediction : Johnson by decision
Cub Swanson vs Renato Moicano
Cub has definitely lost a step, how much is debatable. To win this one he needs to turn it into a scrap, into the chaos in which he thrives. Here though I think Miicano is big enough to keep him where he wants him on the feet and slow the fight down, get the takedowns and grind out a decision.
Prediction : Moicano by decision
Polyana Viana vs JJ Aldrich
No messing around, no internal debate here. Viana wins this relatively easy, probably by submission.
Prediction : Viana by submission
Thiago Santos vs Kevin Holland
Kevin Holland got the call up through the Contenders Series and he can bang, definitely has big power. Can he deal with Santos big game experience though.
Thing with Thiago is we have seen him destroy people and we have seen him get sparked out, depends. I honestly think his experience with the better fighters will see him through.
Prediction : Santos by TKO
Rest of the Card
Pedro Munhoz vs Brett Johns
Another difficult fight for Brett Johns.Although Munhoz is probably not quite at the level of Aljamain Sterling, he’s a hard test for John’s. The thing is that Munhoz is more dangerous on the ground and possibly a little bit better at striking.
So does Johns follow his usual plan and try to crowd Munhoz and put him on his back or does he stand off and risk being picked apart? I think he will try to grind Pedro Munhoz down and make it ugly from the top but to be honest the only thing I see is a submission (guillotine) or decision win for Munhoz.
Prediction : Munhoz by submission
Ricky Simons vs Montel Jackson
Ricky Simon had a hell of a UFC debut including the controversial finish. Now he welcomes another man making his debut. Montel Jackson has looked very impressive at time, against lesser competition of course and I think he will struggle here with the wrestling of Simmons. I think Simons wins a hard fought decision.
Prediction : Simons by decision
Bethe Correia vs Irene Aldana
Aldana will want to stay away and keep Correia at the end of her long strikes.
Bethe will want to get it against the fence and smother Aldana.
Whoever imposes their game plan wins. Myself I’m going for Aldana but it can just as easily be Correia.
Prediction : Aldana by decision
Matt Sayles vs Sheymon Moraes
Moraes first fight in the UFC was against Zabit Magomedsharipov. Maybe this time he will get more of a chance to show what he can do.
Sayles got his contract through the Contenders Series thing and he’s a good enough fighter. Nothing to flashy and most of the time trying to set up that big right hand. I think overall Moraes is a better striker, sharper, and will hurt Sayles when he counters him. Of course Moraes could walk into that right hand and that’s it but I think Sheymon Moraes will be able to out strike Sayles and get the finish in the third.
Prediction : Moraes by KO/TKO
Alex Perez vs Jose Torres
I’m a fan of Shorty Torres but, like last time, this ain’t gonna be an easy fight for him. Perez is a different kind of fighter than Brooks though and this one could be a great contest. I give Torres the edge on speed and explosiveness but he needs to watch Perez striking and watch out for that D’Arce.
Prediction : Torres by decision
Ricardo Ramos vs Kyung Ho Kang
Could be a close enough fight with similarish skill sets but I think that Ramos is a little bit slicker and that could make the difference. Decision win for Ramos, possibly split.
Prediction : Ramos by decision
Danielle Taylor vs Weili Zhang
I can see Taylor getting handled pretty easily here. She’s a strong girl but can see Zhang having her way with her.
Zhang has good subs and a ferocious top game and I think she takes Taylor out in the first or second.
Prediction : Zhang by TKO
Marlon Vera vs Wuliji Buren
Have to pick Vera here. He’s not great but he’s just a better fighter than Buren. He will be busier and in Buren’s face. Vera wins the decision.
Prediction : Vera by decision
