Eddie Alvarez vs Dustin Poirier
They talk about a game of inches but fights like these can be a game of millimetres. One mistake, one loss of focus, slip left when you should have slipped right and it can be all over.
I think this fight belongs to whoever brings it on the night, to whoever has a good game plan and can stick to it. Both of these guys are in the groove and they both believe that they deserve a title shot.
So it will be better for Alvarez if he can keep the range short and make it a brawl, using those powerful hooks to the body and head. I believe Alvarez is the more durable one and can take more damage, however I think that technically Poirier has more tools, more ways to win.
If Poirier can stay on the outside, just out of Alvarez range, and work from there I think he can have success and I’ll go further than that and say Poirier gets the win by stoppage, possibly in the third round.
Prediction : Poirier by KO/TKO
Result : Poirier by TKO
Jose Aldo vs Jeremy Stephens
I feel that Aldo has this unfair tag these days, that he’s done, that he’s exposed now. Truth is of course that he got knocked out quickly by Conor McGregor then beat up twice by Max Holloway. People forget that this is probably the best featherweight the sport has seen. Is he as good as he once was? Has the division passed him by? Maybe but you can tell from losses to Max Holloway. After this fight we will know.
In Jeremy Stephen we have basically a headhunter who hits really hard. Can’t see there being much grappling in this one. I still think Aldo has the advantages, he has better technical striking, a good jab, great timing and maybe just maybe he can get those leg kicks going because Stephens ain’t gonna be trying to take him down. Stephens also won’t set the same kind of pace that Holloway does.
Of course Stephens has that big punch and can end the fight suddenly but I think Aldo still has enough to either win a decision or get a stoppage in the second round.
Prediction : Aldo by TKO
Result : Aldo by TKO
Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Tecia Torres
Joanna seems to be in the same situation as Aldo where she has been ‘exposed’ ‘was never that good’. All bullshit of course, she’s lost to Rose, that’s it!
In Tecia you have a girl who will push Joanna all the way and we will see where her head is at. I can only see a Joanna win in this one. Her range, movement and timing will be too much for Torres.
Prediction : Jedrzejczyk by TKO
Result : Jedrzejczyk by decision
Alexander Hernandez vs Olivier Aubin-Mercier
Alexander Hernandez was very impressive last time out stopping Dariush, very impressive debut. I’m sure he will be looking for more of the same but in Aubin-Mercier we have a very solid fighter. Pretty good everywhere and doesn’t really let himself get in trouble.
I’m really tempted to go for Aubin-Mercier as the safer pick. I think he can slow it down and deal with Hernandez explosiveness and win a decision.
Prediction : Aubin-Mercier by decision
Result : Hernandez by decision
Rest of the Card
Jordan Mein vs Alex Morono
Jordan Mein can look very decent at times, usually at the start of fights. Then as the battle goes on he gets lazy or seems to lose focus or something happens I dunno. Morono ain’t great either he’s got OK boxing but he can jump in at times. I think it depends how much Mein can get done early. Can he rack up points before he fades? I think he can.
Prediction : Mein by decision
Result: Mein by decision
Hakeem Dawodu vs Austin Arnett
Dawodu got caught cold in his last fight but I don’t expect the same to happen here, this one could be a battle. I expect Arnett to throw more volume and land something that hurts Dawodu.
Prediction : Arnett by TKO
Result : Dawodu by decision
Kajan Johnson vs Islam Makhachev
Makhachev is good enough to stay out of danger on the feet and will be too strong on the ground. Decision win for Islam.
Prediction : Makhachev by decision
Result : Makhachev by submission
Gadzhimurad Antigulov vs Ion Cutelaba
We gonna find out how good Cutelaba’s defensive wrestling is here because Antigulov doesn’t fuck around, he just attacks. Although Cutelaba hits hard they are more clubbing punches rather than real explosive power and I doubt he will be able to keep Antigulov off him. Either a pretty clear decision for Antigulov or I think he submits Cutelaba.
Prediction : Antigulov by submission
Result : Cutelaba by TKO
John Makdessi vs Ross Pearson
Makdessi is a little quicker and a bit sharper. Pearson hits harder but he can become a little predictable at times. Unless Ross lands something hard I think Makdessi manages to ride out a decision.
Prediction : Makdessi by decision
Result : Makdessi by decision
Alexis Davis vs Katlyn Chookagian
Davis gets the takedowns to win the decision, simple as that. If she doesn’t she won’t.
Prediction : Davis by decision
Result : Chookagian by decision
Dustin Ortiz vs Matheus Nicolau
Simply put, I think Ortiz can find himself in bad positions and Nicolau can make him really pay for it. If Matheus Nicolau is in good form he can get the sub.
Prediction : Nicolau by submission
Result : Ortiz by KO
Randa Markos vs Nina Ansaroff
Could be a good fight between two girls who are at about the same level. Both will be aggressive and both will push the pace. Randa will be hunting for that clinch and takedown while Nina will be trying to punch her face.
This will go to the judges and I think the style of Markos will see her get to nod because of takedowns and top control.
Prediction : Markos by decision
Result : Ansaroff by decision
Devin Powell vs Alvaro Herrera
When jobbers collide
Fight between two guy who are in no way ‘UFC material’, of course someone has to win and I’ll go for Herrera because he does actually seem to have a bit of power.
Prediction : Herrera by TKO
Result : Powell by KO
